3 diet mistakes to avoid

diet

Sticking to a diet can be tough with so many temptations all around you but some mistakes which dieters make every time can be easily avoided if you know what they are – education is key to successful weight loss. These diet mistakes aren’t the little slip-ups but rather bigger failures which lead to either the diet being a complete waste of time or mistakes that knock you further away from your weight loss goals.

1. The All Or Nothing Attitude

Many dieters will fall into this category and they are the ones that set themselves an impossible task – an extreme diet with no tasty rewards, no room for error and no second chances. You should avoid being too tough on yourself; if everyone gave up at the first hurdle we as humans probably wouldn’t achieve very much at all. These all or nothing dieters will pick out anything in the kitchen which is remotely un-diet friendly and bin it.

You can set out to be the perfect dieter but at the end of the day, nobody is perfect. Make allowances for yourself and try to lead a balanced diet rather than going from one extreme to the other. For whatever reason, sometimes mistakes just happen, your diet falters slightly, well don’t be too harsh on yourself, just dust yourself off, try to figure out why it happened and move on from it.

Remember that if you want to be a long-term successful dieter then you need to make small adjustments to the lifestyle that you lead rather than giant upheavals that aren’t realistic over a longer time-frame.

2. The Attitude of Sacrifice

This is a really common mistake and is the most common cause for yo-yo dieters who constantly see their weight fluctuate as they dive in and out of periods of sacrifice. If you change your mindset and realise that a diet is about looking at your eating habits and making healthy adjustments that will allow you to eat and live healthier for the future.

Seeing a diet as a sacrifice is a surefire way to achieve your weight-loss goal but it is also a surefire way to see your weight skyrocket as you emerge from your period of sacrifice and indulge all the treats you’ve been missing.

Include a little of everything in your diet in order to strike that balance which sees you maintain a healthy weight.

3. Goal Failure

Setting yourself goals is important in any part of your life and dieting is no exception. But setting realistic goals is vital. You should have a clear vision of what you are looking to achieve and by when – knowing why you want to achieve it can also be helpful and serve as ‘mental fuel’ at those times when you are struggling to stay motivated.

You may have an ideal weight, dress size etc in mind but is that realistic to you. You may look at a role model socially or see them in magazines and think that you want to be like him or her but is that going to be achievable. If it isn’t then you are only wasting your time and effort and probably doing more harm than good because it will feel like you’ve failed despite the fact that you didn’t give yourself a fair chance of succeeding in the first place.

If you are committing any of the above 3 cardinal sins of dating then don’t panic, there’s no time like the present to turn things around. You now know a bit about why you aren’t achieving your weight loss goals so hopefully you can learn from the mistakes and push forward with your programme. Remember that above all else you have to make a commitment to yourself to become healthier in general – that’s the only way to ensure you succeed long term when it comes to your weight.
