Is a gastric bypass the easy alternative to that hard slog of a regular exercise plan? We find out…

For anyone looking to shed considerable weight, surgery might seem like an easy solution. Gastric bypasses are just one form of surgery which has helped a huge number of people to lose weight including celebrities that struggle with their weight.

Surgery seems like an easy option when compared with hitting the gym day in day out. But a gastric bypass is of course a very severe almost extreme method of weight-loss so it really isn’t advisable for most people.

A gastric bypass should only be considered if you are severely overweight verging on dangerously obese. Gastric bypasses are designed to help anyone who needs to lose weight for health reasons rather than merely for cosmetic purposes.

The gastric bypass is often referred to as a stomach staple and it works because it decreases the amount of food that can be held in the stomach. Obviously as you eat more and more, your stomach will expand to accommodate this. A gastric bypass works to reverse this and you tend to lose weight as a result of the food bypassing the small intestine which effectively means you can’t eat passed a certain point without throwing up.

Many medical professionals won’t provide a gastric bypass until all other options have been exhausted. In the first instance, you should try to lose weight naturally by altering your diet and incorporating exercise into your lifestyle. A well-balanced and healthy lifestyle is a far easier and safer way to lose weight.

If this doesn’t work on its own (and sometimes it won’t because of lack of will power and other factors) then you should consult a doctor to ask about milder forms of medical treatment like weight-loss supplements and alternative therapies.

If all avenues have been explored and you and your doctor feel that a gastric bypass is the only option then you will need to lose some weight on your own before the surgery can be completed. It is advisable to lose as much weight as you can so that your body can easily take on the side-effects that a gastric bypass may bring.

Similarly to a diet plan, a gastric bypass is only half the battle and it is the work you do after that determines whether it is successful or not. You will need to follow your doctor’s advice, keep up any prescriptions they give you and more importantly maintain a healthy lifestyle – falling into old habits will inevitably result in complications after the surgery.

Statistics and research have proven that gastric bypasses are high-risk and as a result should only be considered in extreme circumstances with as many as 10% of people receiving gastric bypasses will have complications. These complications range in severity from ulcers and hernias to more serious medical complaints like blood clots with some gastric bypasses resulting in death.
